Pride Filled is a piece born from contemplation on a powerful African proverb: “If you fill your head with pride, you will lack space for wisdom.” This artwork invites a closer examination of the ways pride can hinder us. Pride, in this case, refers to conceit and arrogance.

At the heart of this 10×10 mixed media piece is a prominently raised hand clutching a microphone, intricately depicted in subtle shades of blue. This hand symbolizes voice and expression—the bravery to articulate and be acknowledged. Superimposed on it is a proverb in white text, serving as a reminder of the importance of openness to growth, as unchecked pride can hinder our capacity for learning and development

The image is printed on archival, acid-free photo paper, then framed with fabric paint that adds texture and vitality. Above and below the image, I designed filmstrip-like bands to suggest a narrative or unfolding story, underscoring that our growth happens over time, frame by frame.

Surrounding the central figure is a deep blue background, enlivened by symmetrical silver vines that swirl gently on either side. These accents are drawn to reflect the natural flow of wisdom—organic, intricate, and unfolding. The Sankofa bird at the top center connects the piece to the idea of reflection on the past to guide the future, reinforcing the proverb’s call for humility and openness.

Creating *Pride Filled* was distinctive in that it began as a digital concept and evolved into a tactile, layered composition with metallic cream paint, foil cutouts, fabric paint, and a protective UV resin finish. The process mirrors the artwork’s theme—the layering is deliberate, encouraging viewers to explore surface and depth as they reflect on the balance between pride and wisdom.

This piece is meant as both a caution and an encouragement: pride can be a source of confidence, but unchecked, it can prevent us from gaining the insight that true wisdom requires. By making room for humility, curiosity, and ongoing learning, we expand the space within our minds and hearts—allowing wisdom to take root.

*Pride Filled* calls on us to cultivate that openness. It’s a visual conversation about the tension between knowing our worth and remaining teachable. I invite you to engage with this balance, to consider how pride impacts your journey, and to find strength in the humility that leads to greater understanding.
